I worked with a guy who used to say: we were all born onto this world thin, so if people are fat, it's because they chose to be!

He was a naturally thin, tall person....I tried pointing out that some babies are indeed chubby....and that chubbiness in infancy/todlarhood is NOT a personal choice, yet statistically, it has been shown to be the most accurate predictor of 'chubbiness' or being fat in adulthood.... like talking to a wall.

Of course, I like to look at it the other way around....WHY are we obsessed with thinness? Why is it that our ideal of feminine beauty is the 'look' of a pre-pubescent boy? Could this be a sign of a problem the society has? Could this be because our major 3 religions claim that life came from a MALE GOD that anything that even remotely looks like a fertile female body, with its 'nursing reserves', needs to be hidden and shamed?

Personally, I happen to have the body of a Goddess: a peleolithic feritility Goddess, the most worshiped symbol of femininity ever!

Such an awesome post. Love it.

"It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Even now, the WW campaign 'Diets Don’t Work' is a sign of, not victory for FA, but rather a deeper plunge into what will one day be out-and-out encouragement of adopting life-long non-eating, semi-starvation regimes for those who are born with the scarlet three letters: FAT."

WW is using old news with their whole "diets don't work." I just read Laura Fraser's book Losing It (it's about 11 years old now), and she talks about a meta-study where obesity researchers came to this conclusion that diets are useless. They're still pushing them, though.

I'd been encouraged by a diet support group to adopt a life-long starvation regime. Yeah. That's their reply to "diets don't work." They say, "Adopt a new Way of Eating/Way of Life." When I asked them the difference between that and a life-long weight-loss diet? "There is no difference really."

I'm early in the journey too, chiara. It's a funny thing, truth: when you're ignorant of it, it's really easy to do and believe things that are misguided or even wrong. But once you start losing your ignorance, you can't turn back. You start just being unable to do/believe things that you know now to be false.

Isn't the Fat-osphere great? I'm just eating everything up, too. :) Make sure to visit Sandy's site, Junkfood Science.
Thanks, emsy. It would be wonderful if this helps in any way talking to your mother about dieting...I know that size/fat acceptance in a long journey, and even when presented with evidence it's hard for some people to accept.

I hope one day, personally, to help my Dad "throw off the cross." But he resists everything I say, everything I send him. FA is such a personal thing, we all have to approach it in our own way, I think. That's not to say that something we say or have them read isn't going to do the trick, but rather to say don't give up the good fight, even when initially resisted. :)

Hi! First time commenting here.

Wow, I love this post. Thank you for taking the time to write such an eloquent explanation of what fat acceptance is and the challenges that lay on the path of fat acceptance. I think I'll sit my mom down with this post. Maybe she'll understand a little better why I don't think she or I or anyone should diet.

I'm a little envious of your gift with words now!
